Expensive Food Is Worth The Cost by Patricia Reszetylo

Buying a horse is a huge responsibility and requires a commitment of both time and finances. After you have bought the horse, the commitment isn't over. There is still quite a bit to be done. If you want a horse that performs at a high level, you must continue to open the wallet for his sake.

Horse health professionals have developed a few theories on nutrition for horses. One of the things that they always seem to emphasize is that a healthy diet is important for all horses, but more so for those horses that are put through lots of exercise. If you constantly ride your horse, he is going to expect to be fed well. Along with that responsibility comes the expectation that you will put together everything he needs. Your horse's nutrition is nothing to go cheap on. In order to truly have a healthy horse, buy the best food available.

In addition to buying the best food that your bucks can afford, your horse should always be supplied with good water. At every point in the day, there should be lots of it in a clean trough or water bucket. If you have a field trough, then you can probably get by with cleaning it once per week. If you happen to provide water in a bucket, then it should be scrubbed each and every day. Water is one of the things that is essential for healthy brain growth and development. Don't shortchange your horse.

In all honesty, the importance of water is hard to overstate. Not only does an active horse need water to stay standing, but it helps all of the body's organs stay functioning. If you aren't lucky enough to have an automatic watering system, then you better make sure that you or somebody very responsible is around to fill up the clean water trough a few times per day. Your horse's health will thank you and his performance will improve dramatically.

Some horse owners are lucky enough to be able to provide their own stable for their horses. For those of us who aren't quite as lucky, paying for a stable can be quite expensive. Choosing a stable is not the time to get cheap, either. In most cases, you will get exactly what you pay for. The nicer, more expensive stables will be able to provide the clean water and the care that your horse must have in order to grow healthy and perform at the top of its potential.

Though your horse does not have to have a diet of five star foods in order to survive, going cheap on its food and care will only cause problems. Water, hay, some oats, and a little bit of salt are probably all it needs in order to survive. If you are going to own a high functioning animal, though, you must demand more than just survival. Horses were made to thrive and they are capable of performing exceedingly well if you are willing to spend a few bucks on their dietary needs.
