Anyone who has ever owned a small breed dog knows that dog apparel and a small pet carrier are essential items. This is especially true of the owner that insists upon pampering their pet like a little baby. You don't have to be Paris Hilton to clothe your Chihuahua in the latest canine fashions, and you don't have to be Britney Spears to carry your Yorkshire Terrier in the trendiest dog carrier. You also don't need the same size bank account. However, if you are stuck making a choice between clothes or carriers, it helps to decide ahead of time which one is more useful to you as a dog parent. I believe the answer lies in what kind of lifestyle you live with your pooch.
She may be nothing but a hound dog with a howl that pierces your ears, but many times a little puppy must go everywhere that mommy or daddy goes. For those that live on the go or travel a great deal around town with their dog, it's obvious that carriers are a better investment. If this is the case, look for a carrier that's sturdy and comfortable for both you and your dog. Man's best friend does need to walk a lot, so it needs to be easy for your furry baby to get in and out often. An airline approved pet carrier is also going to come in handy for those frequent flyers. I would suggest finding one made of durable, synthetic leather material with lots of padding inside for the dog and on the shoulder straps for the owner. Also, there should be plenty of ventilation and extra room for the dog to turn around and play with toys.
Dog apparel is most useful for small dogs with short hair coats that have to deal with rain and cold weather. If you don't travel a lot but live in a rainy or cool climate like Washington state or Alaska, rain coats and sweaters are necessary clothes for small breed dogs. The bottom line is to assess your situation and needs before deciding what's more important to purchase.
