Dogs come in all shapes, sizes and colours and each brings with it a whole different set of requirements for its dog house. Large dogs probably need a little more thought and care put into their dog kennel than any other type. Not only do you need that extra bit of space so that your pet can comfortably sit or lie down in his house, without becoming squashed against the sides or banging his head on the roof, he will need a much stronger structure to hold him securely.
Large dogs, just due to their extra bulk, can cause untold damage to flimsy wooden walls or poorly fitted joins. All it would take is for them to lean against the wall, or turn around suddenly and bump into it for it to collapse. If you have a dog pen attached to the dog kennel then the latch needs to be extremely secure, or you may have an escapee! The chain link fence will also need to be extra firmly secured to the posts so that it can't just be barged down. Remember, if your dog escapes then he could well get injured by a passing car or any predators that might live in your area.
Dog training in the use of their large dog crate is especially important as this will reduce the likelihood of damage to either the dog or dog house. Your large dog needs to feel comfortable and secure in his home and the best way to achieve this is to make sure that it is well insulated and has a nice, soft blanket or cushion for him to lie on. Some familiar toys or a delicious bone will also make the crate seem like a desirable place to be. Try putting your dog in his new home at various times of day, so that he doesn't just associate it with a certain time, and never use it as a form of punishment or he'll not want to enter it ever again.
Luckily many pet stores have a good stock of extra large dog crates especially designed for the needs of outsize canines. Just make sure that you shop around for a good price, but don't just choose the cheapest option. Look carefully at the quality of the construction and materials used as this should hopefully be your pet's home for many years to come and you don't want to have to buy a new one every 6 months.
